My Day Hour By hour

  •

You might be wondering what a typical day is like for me. Today I have decided to let you take a peek into the action packed day of Mr. Armstrong!

9:00 Wake up, and drink some pre-workout drink while I check emails, prepare blogs, check other peoples blogs, and comment on my friends blogs. Basically pre-blogging as well.

10:00 Collect my gym bag and head to the gym. It is a 3 minute walk to Evo, so there is no excuse not to go. Rain or shine!

11:00 Complete gym training, and come home and make a protein shake. This is when I like to sit down and come up with my best blog of the day. I usually spend a good hour blogging.

12:00 Take a shower and of course use my cardio shower gel! Then I prepare my work clothes and make sure everything is ready and in place to go to work.

1:00 This hour usually consists of some me time. I usually like to sit down and play hearthstone or world of warcraft or maybe even watch my favorite TV show The deadliest Catch with my wife.

2:00 Kiss my wife goodbye and head to work. I take the bus to work, and always make sure that I am either on time or early. I have had my job for over 3 years and have never been late!

3:00 This is when I start work and I kick in to high tempo rema 1000 night shift boss mode! The first hour of work is spent coordinating the day with the other employees. Taking control of the store from the day shift and general organizing in the fruit, fresh meats, and bread departments.

4:00 This hour is almost always spent fixing up the store. I routinely go through every area and make sure it is prepared to last through the night. Filling out any goods that need to be put out onto the shelves while also spending time taking customers at the register.

5:00 Now is when I take care of all of the trash. I prepare the returns and damaged goods to salvage any food I might be able to give to the poor. The things I do during this hour can vary from day to day but it usually consists of dealing with trash.

6:00 Usually around this time the fruit and vegetables delivery comes and I must be on call to take customers at the register while at the same time taking the elevator 3 floors down with an electric jack and receiving several pallets of fruits and vegetables. This hour can get rather stressful, especially if there is only 2 employees on the job.

7:00 If all goes well, and the customers have died down, I get to take a lunch/dinner break and or send the other employee to have their break. This is also a stressful time because while on my lunch break I am expected to be on call to help customers, fix the bottle deposit machine, or come out and take customers at the register. ROCKET FUEL NEEDED!

8:00 At 8:00 we close the alcohol area, and end the sale of alcohol for the day. If I am lucky, and the customers have died down, this is a time when I can focus on some extra tasks, or specialized areas of the store that need extra attention. Half the time I am usually still taking customers at the register and don't have time to do much else.

9:00 During this hour I usually head into the milk cooler and prepare it for the following day. Facing and filling everything so it looks perfect is the main focus. We call it " Making the milk look porno". After completing the milk, I am left with a little time to wrap things up and finish up any extra activities that need done in the store.

10:00 Now the countdown clock starts ticking. There is a crap load of things to do in the last hour. Closing and cleaning the salad bar, preparing fruit which needs to be taken in for the night, preparing the bread that hasn't been sold so it can be disposed of and much more are all part of this hour.

11:00 This is closing time at my store. At this time I close everything down. While most people get to leave at the end of their shift, mine never ends at its scheduled time. There is still stuff to do after closing, and I'm usually still working for another 15 minutes and up to 45 minutes more occasionally.

12:00 Arrive home to my lovely wife. She usually has some dinner prepared, and sometimes I have brought home something to make. Yes we eat dinner at midnight and it's actually kinda nice. We usually eat dinner and watch TV or go to our PC's and do our own thing.

1:00 This is usually heading to bed time. We have eaten, and unwound, and time to relax in our super comfortable bed. We like to watch movies and Youtube on the laptop until the eyes automatically shut on their own.

    And then it starts again!

Every day after I go to the gym I must have a protein shake. Its like an automatic response to going to the gym. In this picture you can see the perfect combination to a perfect shake! Im using the Whey 80 powder (caramel latte flavor), greek yogurt, and unsweetened coconut drink. I slap all this into the magic bullet and just like magic I have the perfect breakfast shake. Sometimes I am thinking about this shake while I'm pumping iron. I literally can't wait to get home and have it. Give it a try, its delish!

Saturday was a super date day with my babe! We completely relaxed and enjoyed ourselves. We took the bus into town and still have over an hour until the movie starts, so we decided to go eat a little sushi at sushi Point while we wait. I had planned to only eat a couple pieces, but a couple turned into like 8 or 10. I was also impressed because they had some wonderful dumplings!

The plan was to eat a little bit of sushi and save our hunger so we could finally eat at Bardus afterwards, but it didn't quite work out that way.  I actually think I am addicted to sushi. I eat sushi almost every day. I might need an intervention if things keep going this way. After our sushi party we headed to the theater to watch Warcraft. I couldn't help myself and on the way I had to ride on this little concrete bear guy. It was amazing as you can see!

Is it a bear? Is it a seal or a walrus?  I think the poor guy is missing a foot.I really don't know what inspired me to ride it but it was a great feeling! We still had some time to kill so I grabbed a coffee at the little shop inside the movie theater. They always make the yummiest coffees, so I love to relax with one before the movie starts. If you look closely, it looks like they made a power ranger head in the milk foam!

As for the movie itself, I was really excited to see it. I have literally been waiting years to see this movie, and I couldn't believe it had finally came. It was sort of like christmas because I was so excited. I am a big fan of World of Warcraft, and have been playing it since it began which is like 12 years or something!  Lately I have been taking a break until the next expansion comes.

Right from the beginning, the music was playing. It was horde music that I have heard in the game before and I got the chills! I am a horde player for life and have never even bothered to make an Alliance. I actually was slightly inspired to go home and reactivate my account and start playing again!

I thought the movie was great. I absolutely loved the graphics, and have no problem with the CGI. I thought the acting was pretty good, and the script was mediocre but actually not as bad as I heard others say. There were so many easter eggs in the movie. Basically stuff for fans. It was cool to see some of the lands I have spent many hours leveling characters on the big screen! I'm not sure if Tonje caught as much of it as I did, but I think she really liked it too!

All in all it was a super date day with Tonje. We enjoyed each others company and enjoyed the day to the maximum. it was a super way to end the week and a great start to the next week! Thanks for reading and enjoy your day to the max!

Hi readers! It makes my heart warm inside to know that you have taken time to have a look at today's manly fashion blog.  Here is a look at what I've got cooking in the fashion kitchen on this fine sunny day in Tromsø!

First up we went with no hat today. Time to let the mohawk afro free. Then cruising on down to this fine shirt which represents a cool band Falling in Reverse, and most of all my favorite cereal killers mask of Jason Vorhees. Today I slapped on the Jack n Jones blue denims which I haven't worn for a while and surprisingly weren't so snug around the waste. They buttoned all the way up without having to suck it in! Such a pleasure. Then I chose these fine DC grey and red sneakers for easy access slip on straps, and comfort.

Here you have these high fashion socks provided by Loot Crate which say "don't F with me, I'm a star wars pimp" They are extremely comfortable and very airy which is perfect on a warm day.

For the final manly touch we went with this delicious timepiece from Invicta. As you can see it is a "Special Edition". Yes I know your'e not loving on the hairy arm in the background, but hey it's part of being a fashion man. I got this great timepiece from my Uncle. Such a fine gift! Thanks for the <3 have a terrific day!

As many of you know, I help out the less fortunate of Tromsø. Many of them come in to the store I work at and ask for food to help them through the month. Many are homeless, drug addicted, alcoholics, poor, street magazine sellers and everything in between. With this blog I would like to help out one of them even further.

It often bothers me that many of these people continue to struggle, and continue to use drugs and make poor decisions, but I still help them because they are human, and no human should go hungry while I am throwing away so much food everyday. The person I would like to help out is named Florin, and he actually is making good decisions.

Florin comes from Romania. From what I understand circumstances led him to be homeless in Romania, so he managed to come to Norway where it is much safer to be homeless. He told me stories of how rough it is to be homeless in the streets of Romania, and I don't blame him for wanting to come to Norway, despite the harsh weather conditions it is still way better.

Many think of the Romanians in Tromsø as the beggars who sit on their butts and do nothing but ask for money. This guy Florin,is a go-getter. He actually has the eye of the tiger and is determined to find any work possible. He has a beautiful daughter who lives in Romania, and has a goal set to go back and visit her in October, but needs to raise some cash.

During the summer I have Florin come and mow my grass. It takes about an hour or more and I tip him 200 kr. and hook him up with a bite to eat. He does a fantastic job and always goes the extra mile. He is an honest guy and is willing to work hard for his money.

I told him I would write this blog for him in hopes it would help. I also told him that it isn't a guarantee that it will work, but it was at least worth a try. So, if you are someone in need of some general yard work this is your guy. He assured me that he has all the documents to live and work in Norway. When I told him I would do this for him, I could see his face light up and he had the biggest smile ever. It really means allot to him as well as me. Florin also specializes in Painting, so if you have a painting project or any work whatsoever please give this guy a call.Thank you so much for reading and please, lets just make a difference for someone less fortunate than us! If you have any questions or concerns you can contact me here. If you would like to enlist this hard worker, you can call Florin directly at 45536144. He is pretty good at English! It is better to tip this guy for some hard work rather than drop coins into a cup! Feel free to share this post with your friends in Tromsø if you feel like it.

  •

Our time on earth is extremely valuable. Each hour is one hour further away from the beginning, and one hour closer to the end. We need to realize that everything we do can make a difference.  I try and give my best to everything I do. Whether it is training at the gym, making a nice dinner at home, completing tasks at work, creating art, or doing whatever inspires you to do your best, the eye of the tiger can be called upon.

We each have the eye of the tiger in us. What I mean is that we all have the ability to give something our all. Put everything you got into everything you do and it will make a difference! Rise to the occasion, and unlock the eye of the tiger! Focus on the task at hand and nothing else, and release the eye of the tiger! If you use this method my friend, the results can be amazing! Have a fantastic day and thank you for reading!

  •

Today I took a break from the gym and decided to have a little lunch out on the back patio with my cats. The weather is so nice and it is refreshing to get some good weather for once in a lifetime! It's not often we get weather like this here in Tromsø, so you gotta make the best of it.

I have to work today as I have every single Friday for the past 3+ years. It's not easy dedicating every single Friday night to your job, but this is what pays the bills, and perhaps it keeps me out of trouble! (:

I had my usual protein shake and I lined up a nice row of cat snacks for Freddy ad Slash. These guys are so silly. They act like it is Christmas every time I put out snacks for them. Its good to know that they appreciate it!

Now Slash is full like a big fat pig and he wishes you to have a great day. Enjoy the sunshine. Don't dwell on negative things. Look for the positive! Put yourself in the light! PEACE! <3

  • 10 Things You Didn't Know About me

  • Publisert: 27.05.2016, 10:57

  •

I usually try and just be myself and come up with my own ideas, but today I decided to do something that every blogger does at least once. The following list is 10 things you didn't know about me. Deep, dark, juicy, and personal! I hope you enjoy!

    1. I was born premature and lived the beginning of my life in an incubator. I weighed only a few pounds!

    2. I have had 3 different last names, Yakubec Smith and now Armstrong.

    3. When I was 8 years old I was baptized as a Mormon.

    4. When I was 16 I broke my ankle doing bike tricks and had to have a long screw put in the bone.

    5. I dropped out of high school my senior year, but eventually got my diploma through home school a couple years later.

    6. My favorite all time food is anything Mexican, but sushi is slowly catching up.

    7. I had a cat named Axel rose who was my best friend and I took him in my car, and sometimes he wore a harness so I could take him on walks with a leash.

    8. I don't like to fight. I've only been in one fight in my life and it wasn't much of a fight. I punched a guy in the face and then it was over.

    9. I love to sing and think I actually have a pretty good voice.

    10. If I was rich I would help out my family and poor people.

So that's it. Now you know a little more about me. I'm a pretty nice guy with a good heart. I care about people and I want everyone to be my friend. Thanks for reading and have a fantastic day!

After all my blogs about thinking positive, looking at the bright side, not giving up etc, today happened. From problems with the register to training new employees, the positive moments were difficult to find..And then I ran into a metal pole head first and I felt like I was gonna pass out..I was in shock and couldn't figure out what actually happened. It's actually really embarrassing so therefore I am inclined to share it because you and I are cool like that. Hopefully my next work day will be better! (ps keep your eye on the guy in all dark blue with a pony tail as he multi tasks from employee comunication to shopping cart clean up and try not to laugh lol) 😣

  • Think positive to survive!

  • Publisert: 24.05.2016, 11:45
  • Kategori: Blogg

  •

There are so many negative things in life. There is allot of negative forces in the world that just want to bring us down.  So many Debbie downers, and so many bullies who would be perfectly content with ruining our day. Trust me my friend, we can overcome anything.

Maybe you have a negative family member who brings you down. Maybe there is someone who bullies you at school. Perhaps someone on the internet always makes negative comments on your posts. Maybe you put a status on Facebook that one of your friends doesn't agree with and they send you a private message in an attempt to bring you down. Maybe you have a boss that never has anything nice to say. Maybe there is that problem customer at the store you work at that always points out everything that is wrong with what you are doing. There is always someone out there looking to make themselves feel better by bringing you down.

With every 1 negative there are 2 positives. We have the ability to turn off the negatives and see only the positives. Always remember that if you let someone bring you down, then they are winning and you are losing. Do you want to lose against someone you don't particularly care for? One up them, and remain in control. Don't let them get the best of you and do whatever you can to remain positive and upbeat.

My advice for keeping positive is to think about yourself and no one else, at least for now. Put on your headphones and pump out some high tempo music with an inspiring message. Do something special just for you. If that means having a drink, going to eat a nice lunch at a restaurant, or even having a smoke, just do it and enjoy it. Be thankful that you get to do that, and remember that there others that don't get to enjoy themselves as much as you. Perhaps even go share a lunch, smoke, or drink, or anything you have to share with someone less fortunate. Sharing with someone else always makes me feel good.

Keeping positive and looking for the good in everything is a tool I have learned over time. I assume it takes a lifetime to master, but it is something you can start in on immediately, and the results come quickly. Most importantly never give up. When you give up then you lose and the negativity wins. Look for the good, look for the positive, and look for the bright side, because sometimes that is the only way to survive! Have a fantastic day my amazing readers!

  • Why we blogg

  • Publisert: 23.05.2016, 13:12
  • Kategori: Blogg

  •

There are so many reason why we blog. Each person is different with their opinions and tastes. Everybody has a different hobby yet some of us share the same hobby. There are so many reasons one might blog.

Some people are bored and are just looking for something to do. Some people need attention that they don't receive otherwise. There are many who blog about working out at the gym and perhaps they use it as self motivation. Others might blog about the gym to motivate others because motivating others makes them feel good. Some like to blog about food, and recipes because they love eating and making food and when you have a love for food you want to share it with everyone.

There are many who blog to fill a hole in their lives. They don't feel like enough is happening in their life so they turn to blogging to perhaps make something magical happen. There are allot of bloggers who blog about silicone breasts, lips, bootys, and all kinds of altered parts on their body because , well maybe they aren't happy with what they are given and they want everybody to know that. There are some people who blog because they want to become famous, and perhaps get rich off of social media. There are so many reasons one might blog, but there is one reason that 99% of us do it. It ties in with one of my last blogs. The reason we blog is because we want to be heard. We want others to feel what we feel, and we want others to understand us.

Most of these are reasons that I blog. Almost all of them fit me, except the part about silicone, although I wouldn't mind a surgery that makes me taller if it wasn't so painful. Reach out to your fellow bloggers and show them support. Comment on their blogs and make them aware that you understand where they are coming from. The more you do that, the more they will reach out to you and understand where you are coming from, because in the end we are all really the same.

Have a fantastic day friends and fellow bloggers. BLOGGERS UNITE!!! (:

We all are so diverse. Everybody has unique talents and abilities. Each person has special needs. Each of us were born with different body types, looks, and personalities. Everybody takes a different path in life and each person sets and achieves different goals. But there is something that binds us all together, something that makes us all brothers and sisters. It's something we should remember anytime we feel the need to do someone else wrong. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.  We are all humans, and I'm just like you.

I eat food and drink water. I sleep when I get tired and wake up when either something wakes me up, or when I am fully rested. I have to go to the bathroom, and sometimes I take a while. I smile when I'm happy but I frown when I'm angry or sad. I want to be heard and known. I want others to understand me. You see I'm not far off from being like you.

I enjoy free time. I love to have time for myself. I love to go outdoors, but can really appreciate being home in my own space. There are some people I care allot about, but some others that I don't care much for. I love my favorite food, but there are really some foods I just cant stand. I feel in control when I know what to do, but I feel lost when i get confused. You see I actually am allot like you.

When I get cut I bleed. When I feel pain it really hurts, physically and emotionally. When I close my eyes I see darkness, but when I open them I am filled with light. You see my friend, I really am just like you. Perhaps I have never met you, but we are still the same. Please remember to care about other people. Don't bully or pick on others. Be caring when someone needs help. Be understanding when someone needs your time. Go out each day and do something nice for someone at least once a day, and the reward will come back to you many times. Unlock your empathy and you unlock unlimited love. Please if you understand where I am coming from then share this one. I don't often ask to share my blogs but this is a point I want as many people as possible to think about! Have a fabulous day my friend!

I cant take credit for coming up with the idea of these yum yums, but I do take credit for clicking the link I saw on facebook and making them perfectly. They turned out AWESOME! Top them with a little sour cream and they are simply the bomb.com ask your mom!

Grease a cupcake pan. Then cut a package of large tortillas into squares. Each tortilla should make 4. Basically just cut the edges off, and then divide them into 4.

Chop up an onion and cook it in some oil until it is nice and soft. Then add the ground beef and just keep chopping it in the pan until you have completely mixed and chopped the meat into fine tiny little nuggets.

Next add some canned chopped tomatoes (about 150 grams) and a package of taco seasoning and mix it up good. (this will be the filler) Now place one of the tortilla squares into the bottom of each greased cupcake pan hole and press it down. Drop about a spoon full of meat into each one. Then sprinkle a large pinch of grated cheese into each one. Now cover each one with another tortilla square and press it down. Repeat the first 2 steps and drop another spoon full of meat and some more cheese into each one.  Bake at about 190c for about 15 minutes and WALAH! Delicious taco cups for the whole family!

  • Sometimes you just have to decide it will be a great day. If you decide when you go to sleep at night that tomorrow will be a great day, chances  are that it will indeed be a great day. In most cases having a bad day is all in your mind.  With the right  mind you can make anything positive!

  • When good Karma catches up to you!

I help out the poor. I inspire people to good things. I rock at my job. I motivate my colleagues to do good at their job. I do allot of good stuff in my work life, and the only thing I get is a well deserved, yet not big enough paycheck. But there is one small investment that takes place and that is my investment in good karma.

Every day I am organizing and arranging and dealing out food to the needy people of Tromsø. It's not my food, I didn't pay for it, but  I use allot of effort and time to take care of the ones who need my help with the perfectly good food that would normally end up in the trash. Half the time I don't get the appreciation for what I do, and honestly I don't really expect it. I just do it because I know I am doing a good thing, and that makes me feel satisfied.

Sometimes good karma comes back my way and it is much appreciated. Recently I started helping out a man who tells me he works for free for the local church mission place. He also helps out the poor people of Tromsø. He comes in and collects the usable yet not so perfect vegetables and sometimes meat. He in turn makes it into food which he shares with poor people.

Recently this kind man has shared the food he creates with me. If there is one way to my heart, that is to make me some good food. I usually make most of my food, so when someone else makes it for me it is a pure delight. When I see him come walking up with a bowl of food in his hand, I feel a warmth in my heart. It brings a smile to my face and I am so thankful. It's not so much the actual food that makes me happy, but its when someone shows me the appreciation for the nice things I do that really makes me feel good inside. It is a rare occasion. There is good in everything you just have to always look for it! Have a fantastic day!

  •

I recently made a purchase to gymgrossisten.no and they surprised me with a special treat. They gave me this package of so called "cardio" shower gel. I really don't understand how it can help my cardio workout, but anything and everything helps! It claims that it performs like a nose strip or smelling salt. Sports scientists recommend unblocking nasal passage to reduce fatigue.

I just finished testing this out in my post workout shower. It smells fresh, but it looks like vomit. I tried breathing some of it in directly up my nose to see if it reduced my fatigue and sadly it didn't help much. I'm still fatigued..Oh well you can't win them all! (:

As many of you know I save food at my job to help out poor people. In my city there are homeless, poor, drug addicts, and people who are having a hard time who can use some extra help in the form of food. Helping these people is the highlight of my job, but sometimes it can be tough. I simply save the damaged goods, and perfectly good but out of date food for them.

Recently I was at work and doing my regular thing. Organizing the shelves, helping customers, filling up the fruit and vegetables, and just working at a high tempo are the things I do on a regular basis. My shift had just started, and I had a very positive outlook for the day.

One of our regular drug addict customers who usually is very poor, came up to me and asked me if there was any snacks or treats "snadder" that I could help him out with. I said sure my friend, just meet me at the register on the way out and I will have a bag of food for you. While I was organizing a bag of food for him, I was made aware that he was in the store stealing. I was shocked that he was stealing just as I was going to help him out, but i shrugged my shoulders and headed out to confront him.

I politely asked him if he accidentally put something in his pocket that he hadn't paid for. He immediately became mad and started yelling at me and called me bad words, and tried to tell me that the things in his pocket were bought at a different store. He then proceeded to threaten me. He took off his jacket and his shirt in the middle of the store and raised his fists up to my face. He was much taller than me, and way bigger than me, maybe 250 lbs. I was actually scared but I pretended not to be because I didn't want him to get the best of me.

I calmly turned away and just left him standing there. I decided the best thing is to get away from the situation before it gets any worse. We called the police and explained that there was a customer threatening employees in the store. The police came and handcuffed him as he was yelling bad stuff back at me. It didn't end well for him, but it could have been so much easier.

This event happened at the beginning of my shift. When this kind of thing happens, it is hard to stop thinking about it. This guy literally bit the hand that feeds him. I had feelings that I no longer wanted to help the needy people of Tromsø. I was so upset and the only thing I could do was sit down in our break room and eat a wienerbrød while my hands were still shaking. I felt really disrespected.

After serious consideration, I decided that I would continue to help people despite the actions of this guy. I wasn't going to let one guy ruin it for everybody else that needs my help. It has been months since this incident, and I have helped many people since. I wont give up on these people, even if they ruin my day sometimes. The best thing about this, is that I learn from it.

Good day to you my amazing readers. To those in Norway I hope you had a fabulous 17th of may! Oh what a great time we had. First I would like to say it was wonderful with 4 days off work. The last day before closing the store was hell, and I'm sure today will be hell since it is the first day open after being closed for 3 whole days, but it was all worth it. We got some quality relaxation time in and it was well needed.

The 17th of May was a very nice treat. We spent the day with family, and it is always nice spending time with my stepdaughter. I began the day with some really tasty punch. At first I wasn't aware that it had alcohol, but after a few drinks I was feeling nice and talkative.

After a few glasses of the hard-punch, we were treated to one of the yummiest meals I have tasted in a long time. I would actually call it gourmet, because it felt like something you would get in a fancy restaurant, and oh how it hit the spot. It was some stew made with deer and mushrooms and some french fries made with celery root.

I really didn't want to stop eating that delicious meal but there were other people who needed some too, so I had to hold myself back.  After the delicious meal, we were treated to coffee and cakes. I mean its the 17th of Cake and everybody loves cake right!!?

I can say I was completely satisfied with our holiday. Tonje and I got to finish the day off relaxing, and watching movies and playing some horror games on xbox. Now the red days are over and it is back to reality. Time to get back to the gym because I haven't been for a week almost. Time to get back to work, because people need to restock on their food, alcohol, and tobacco supplies. It is basically back to reality. Oh how wonderful it was with some free days, and now its a long stretch until more red days. Next up is SUMMER VACATION! Only 35 days away!

I would just like to shout hip hip hurrah, because today is Norways independence day!  The constitution was signed at a place called Eidsvoll back in 1814 on the 17th of May.  It was an attempt for Norway to avoid surrendering to Sweden after something called the Napoleonic wars.

I cant think of a time when more cake is eaten. Norway LOVES to eat cake on this day. Usually big creamy cakes with strawberries and blueberries. It becomes cake madness and it is impossible to avoid eating cake on this day. They should call it The 17 of CAKE!

Today everyone will eat cake, hot dogs, and ice cream. The finest Norwegian clothing will be worn, and parades will march down the street. Everyone will have a free day from work, and it is indeed a glorious day in Norway.

We can be thankful that we are actually allowed to celebrate this day because in the beginning Norway was in a union with Sweden and was ruled by a guy who didn't like cake so much. His name was Karl Johan. He felt that parading, and eating cake etc. was a protest, so he didn't allow celebrations.

So now Norway is one of the freest countries I know. Sometimes I feel that it is even freer than America, so today we will just celebrate and eat cake!! HAPPY 17TH OF MAY YALL!

  •

I came up with this on accident and it tasted amazing! When we were shopping for the ingredients, they were out of roast beef. I had planned to make Philly Cheesesteak sandwiches, so I had to improvise. I used some nice thin cuts of peppered ham!

Basically slice up about half an onion and half a green pepper per sandwich and Saute them in a pan with some oil, garlic powder, salt, and pepper until they get soft. Meanwhile toast some buns and have them ready to go with plenty of Mayo on each half. Its very important to toast the buns, it adds to the yuminess! Dump the peppers and onions onto one half of the burger bun after they have gotten soft. Then slice the ham into thin strips, about one pack or 100 grams per sandwich, and drop them into the hot pan (don't clean the plan, just leave the remnants of oil from the onion and pepper for extra taste!).  Now put on several slices of your favorite white cheese (I used one called Gradost) over each pile of ham that is frying in the pan. Cover the pan so that the cheese quickly melts all over the meat. Then scoop up the smoldering cheesey gooey piles of meat and cheese and plop it on top of the onions and peppers! WHALA. You have yourself a Philly-Cheese-Pepper-Ham sandwich! Try this out and thank me later! (:

I was just browsing through my dropbox and found some good ole pics from 2014. It was the year we actually dressed up for 17th of may. I had the mustache going and Tonje had nearly the same haircut as me.  We are so awesome.

Tonje managed to put on her Bunad and I slipped into the suit I got married in. It was nice, and it was fun, but I think its time I get a new suit.

Tonje wanted a balloon and if she wants a balloon she gets a balloon! She was really happy that she got a balloon!

  • Lagerfest Horror Stories Part 2

  • Publisert: 15.05.2016, 10:01
  • Kategori: Blogg

  •

(continued) The next Lagerfest ended on a bad note as well. It all started great though. We had all the usual, free alcohol, great vibes fun and dancing. This time I was teaching everyone the American way to shotgun a beer. Just cut a hole in the bottom, put it up to your mouth, opo the top and chug!

The Lagerfest turned into a full on night  out on the town. We got bored, so we headed to the nearest bar called Fun Pub. Its one of the most popular places in town, and everyone loves to go there to dance and have fun. We spent lots of money there and everyone drank so much that we were all best friends and loved each other so much.  Dancing, sweating, and hugging was the theme and everything went great until it was time to go around 3 am.

I left the club and it was freezing ice cold outside. Somehow I had lost my jacket, but that didn't bother me too much at first because I was so hot and sweaty from busting out so many dance moves. I began to find a cab, and there were none to be found. I could barely see straight, and I believe steam was coming off of me from being so hot. I just started wandering around town looking for a cab.

I tried every cab waiting spot in town and all of them either had a long line or there was simply no cabs around,  so at some point I came up with the brilliant idea that I would walk home. I started staggering my way out of town and realized that I could barely see, I couldn't walk straight, I didn't have a jacket, and it was starting to get really cold. Were talking bitter cold. I decided to turn around and go back to look for a cab.

I ended up camping inside of 7/11 for a while because it was too freezing cold. There were several other stragglers who also were drunk and in need of a cab. I made friends with them and we passed the time laughing and talking. Soon it was approaching 5 am and I still couldn't get a cab. It was beginning to snow hard. I felt horrible and was freezing cold. I made a desperate move and ran out into the street in front of a passing cab. He stopped and picked me up.

Next thing I know the cab driver is waking me up in the back seat. I must have fallen asleep. Turns out I didn't have any money left and couldn't pay. I had to make an agreement to pay when I had the money and somehow managed to exit the cab and go home. I was so relieved to finally get home, but it was almost 6 am.

I ended up getting a mild case of pneumonia. The doctor urged me to take some sick days from work, but I stubbornly refused because I didn't want to let anybody down. I spent the next week and a half with no voice. Its not easy to work at the cash register with no voice, but somehow I managed. Again I regretted not taking some days off work, but hey I'm a machine! Now I come completely prepared before I go to any sort of Lagerfest! Have a great day thanks for reading!

In Norway we have a special party called Lagerfest. It is basically a party sponsored by your job. It takes place in the warehouse and or merchandise receiving area. It is always really fun, and most likely involves drinking allot of alcohol! I don't drink very often but at Lagerfest I am a FULL GO! At lagerfest you get to spend time with your colleagues , and show them what a real jackass you can be. Its almost like getting drunk on the job with your work friends in your normal clothes but there is no work to do! It can be incredibly awesome! Somehow I always ending up getting in to trouble.

Every time I go to Lagerfest, my wife usually has something to say to me before I head out the door. She says "Don't drink too much, make sure you have money for a cab, don't forget to wear a jacket,  and PLEASE don't get in a fight". She has a good reason for saying this!

At my first Lagerfest, we had an amazingly fun party. Everyone was laughing and smiling and dancing and having a great time. I think we had a whole PALLET of beer, Jelly shots, and tons of hard stuff. There was karaoke and lots of great music. I was as usual, downing shots of Captain Morgan, and doing my usual Captain Morgan pose and just completely enjoying the party. But at the end of the party things turned sour.

Around 4 am I headed out to find a cab. Cab lines in Tromsø can be brutal. Everyone is standing on the side of the road, misbehaving, being drunk, and waiting in the freezing cold for the next cab. I took my place in line and waited about 20 minutes while freezing my ass off. Suddenly a tall drunk guy came walking up smoking a cigarette and cut in front of me in line. I politely tapped him on the shoulder and said excuse me but you cant just cut in front of me like that, go to the back of the line. He turned around and blew smoke down into my face and in Norwegian said to me "I'm going to do whatever I want and there's nothing you can do about it".

I was really drunk, and my patience meter was pretty much gone. My patience switch turned directly off, and I felt this sudden intense rage build inside of me. I was 39 years old and had never been in a fight in my life but something told me that now was the time. I wound up my fist and grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and pulled his face into my fist as hard as I can. His shirt ripped in half and he went flying to the ground on his back. The crowd took my side and defended me as he stood back up to come at me again. Some guys held him back while he was yelling at me calling me a F#"€%ng immigrant, and a horse penis. Some other guys shouted "Hey aren't you the boss at Rema? Yeh man you can go to the front of the line sir!" I was amazed. It was the first time I punched someone in the face. It felt quite fantastic, but I did feel bad for the guy. I also couldn't believe that I didn't feel hardly anything on my hand! I took the next cab home and went to sleep.

The next day I woke up with the worst hangover. My head was pounding, and I was so thirsty, my mouth felt like a dry desert, and for some reason my hand was throbbing in pain, especially one of my fingers. It was so painful, but somehow I managed to go to work the next day and even made it through the next 2 days. I finally ended up going to the hospital and was told the tip of my finger was cracked and was urged to take some sick days from work. I refused to take the sick days because I didn't want to let my boss or my colleagues down and I just toughed it out. I regretted not taking any sick days because it was allot of pain every day for a couple weeks. You live, you learn I guess! The next Lagerfest didn't end too well either haha lol! (to be continued)

  • Red days wont get me down!

  • Publisert: 13.05.2016, 11:32

  •

Hi best friends! Thanks for taking a moment to have a look into my life. I have to say I really appreciate your support for reading my blogs. It warms my heart to know that someone actually is interested in what this crazy American is doing while living up near the north pole!

About a week ago I posted a blog about how much I despise the red days in Norway. These are free days for most people and it is actually a fantastic thing for many. The problem is that I work in a grocery store and the red days put allot of stress on the grocery store workers. Especially the store manager who has to run around like a chicken with his head cut off doing everything and everything to serve the customers.

When the stores close for the red days, it means that customers flock to the store like seagulls. They shop like it is the end of the world and the amount of customers doubles and sometimes even triples! Its not easy to deal with, but that is what I get paid to do and I do my best to keep up a smile the whole time.

Today is Friday and the 2nd to the last day of shopping before everything closes for 4 days to celebrate Norways independence day! Lucky for me I don't work on Saturday which is when all the stores close early and it is the absolute last day to go shopping before the end of the world hits. I pity the sould that have to work that day, but I'm sure they will survive. Today I am prepared! Aint nothing gonna get me down OH NO!

Today absolutely nothing is going to get me down. I am going to be so positive and pumped that nothing will stand in my way or ruin my day. I will smile in the face of a rude customer and turn their attitude around. I will be vigilant against thieves but remain understanding and compassionate of their situation. I will help any homeless, drug addicts, poor people, or anybody that needs help with food because I have stockpiled a large supply of goodies to help them through the celebration weekend! I will make time to help people even if there is no time to make. Its going to be a fantastic day!

With that said, I encourage you to have an amazing day. If you need to go shopping like its the end of the world then just do it because I am prepared. And while I'm doing that, my cat is going to be laying at home relaxing in the sunshine. Slash also would prefer it if you and I have a lovely day!

Have a great day yall! <3

I save as much usable stuff for poor people, and that makes it less to throw away. It's never fun and it smells bad but it's my job and I just do it! Now back to work. Peace!

    17th of May

Tis a day of fun and cheer

This day only comes once a year

Hip hip hurrah as the children play

Norway loves to celebrate in May

Parade down the street in your best bunad

Its definately not a day for a dugnad

Eat lots of hot dogs and ice cream

This day is like a pleasant dream

Having fun out in the sunshine

But if it rains we will be just fine

Be with your family on this special day

Oh how we love to celebrate the 17th of May

Good day awesome readers! Today is a day that needs to be done but everyone likes to skip it. That's right I'm talking about LEG DAY! Its always hard to workout the legs because it usually leaves you well, basically shaky in the legs. It's an area that doesn't show unless you're wearing shorts so its easy to SKIP LEG DAY, and work on an area that shows more. Have a look at my routine, and note the mental warm up. I will most definitely  not skip that!

Leg day is extremely important. The legs contain the biggest muscles in the body, and if you work them it actually works out your whole body. In general, a leg workout is the best thing man can do to improve his overall fitness level. Today I plan to hit it hard, because soon its the big national holiday in Norway on May 17th. I plan to relax and chill and maybe even netflix during this time so I'll just get leg day over with!

Today I will also be testing out my newest protein powder. They came out with a new flavor and it sounds delicious, Caramel Latte! Have a fantastic day folks, and DON'T SKIP LEG DAY! It will do you some good (:

  • (a picture of me in my younger yet still cat loving years)

It would be my pleasure to start or end your day with a smile! Hows about a bouquet of kitties? I just plucked them from the kitty garden. They want to be your best friend!

There is one thing that isn't so fun about cats. They like to sharpen their little cat claws on anything and everything. If you yell at them for doing it, it only inspires them to do it more and or do it somewhere else. Couches, table legs, corners of the wall, and basically anything at cat height is not safe. Therefore you must provide them with something they like to sharpen their claws on.

After pulling my hair out trying to stop my cats from clawing the sh#% out of everything we own, I finally learned that all they need is somewhere to vent their claw frustration. Somewhere that they can call their own.

As you can see Slash and Freddy took full advantage of this corner of the wall. funny part is that I tricked them. They think they are clawing a hole in the wall but are actually clawing this claw board thingey. Imagine how this would have looked on the side of our couch or on the wall itself!

Today is a new day and time for a new claw board. I hope my little claw machines like this because it wasn't cheap. 225 kroners (27 dollars to be exact). So without further adieu, CLAW AWAY CLAWMASTERS OF NORWAY!!!

Good day to you my lovely readers! I hope you are having a productive day. I plan to hit the gym before I go to work today. Lucky for me, I will be doing my favorite routine, chest biceps and triceps! I love this day because it makes me puff out in all of my favorite spots. When your chest and arms are bulging out you feel like a bad ass M'fer.

I got this fantastic routine from a good friend who is helping me achieve my goals. I plan to be looking good with as little fat as possible for my upcoming birthday July 13th.

If you haven't done it already, I challenge you to get out there and find a gym. It feels so amazing to get on a long streak of consecutive days at the gym. It boosts confidence and not to mention makes your body feel great! Have an amazing day my friends! (: You are welcome to use this routine, and if you are an english reader, I would be more than happy to translate the norwegian parts for you !

  •

Everybody has trouble with Monday. Its the first day of a long work week. We are quite often bloated and out of shape from the relaxed weekend and its usually difficult to get it going again. Here are some of my tips for having a great Monday!

    1. Start planning on Sunday and have all your clothes neat and folded.
    2. Plan out the weeks dinners so it is one less thing to think about.
    3. Start with a positive attitude on Sunday, and let it carry over into Monday morning.
    4. Begin Monday with any exercise of any sort. (even 15 minutes can do you good!)
    5. Start your Monday with some stretching. Focus on the legs because you will use them!
    6. Drink a protein shake. Don't ask me why, just know that it helps.
    7. Plan what you will do on the next weekend so that you have something to look forward to!
    8. Most important, keep smiling and thumbs up!

    HAVE A GREAT MONDAY!

Up and at-em on a Monday morning. The first thing I do before I head to the gym is drink this interesting blue concoction. Its called Kill it, and it does just that. It helps you kill it at the gym. Its full of everything you need to have focus and motivation to make it through the gym workout.

I think every successful day starts with some sort of exercise. If you aren't exercising then you aren't doing yourself any favors. It is really important to keep yourself in shape if you want to stay in the game! It makes your body feel alive. It stretches out your muscles and bones after a long lazy weekend. It helps store some energy which can be released later in the work day! Best of all it makes you feel good about yourself. If you aren't training or working out on a daily basis, then I challenge you to do so. You will thank me afterwards. Try some kill it! Have an amazing day!

  •

Good day my dear readers thanks for tuning in! My blog today is mostly for my overseas readers but if anyone in Norway wants to follow along, then you\re welcome as well. Im going to do a little comparison on the price of things in Norway.

Ever since I came to Norway, I still cant get over the price of things. Im feeling more comfortable about it now after 11 years of experience, but it is still quite interesting how much things cost in Norway. I am going to post a few pictures of some random items I have boughten, and post the price in Dollar amount so its easy for everyone to understand.

Let me know what you think! Don\t be afraid to post a response. Feel free to post a picture of something you think is expensive where you live and I can see how much it costs here. Lets have a little fun!

100 grams generic wet cat food

    36 cents

The latest Samsung galaxy s7 edge without an agreement

    $1012.00

    A dozen eggs

    $5.25

One of the newest games for xbox one

    $74.00

A small energy drink with special stuff in it

    $3.17 +13 cents deposit

A small pack of coconut flavored yogurt

    $3.17

It has taken me a while to turn off the constant dollars to kroners converter in my brain. At first I was afraid to buy anything. It was probably better because I saved money better. Now I have managed to just take it for what it is and buy the things I need without comparing the prices to what I am used to. Comment with pics of your own with the prices so that we can compare! Have a great day!

Sometimes I don't get cat logic. Every time Slash jumps on the table he gets yelled at and swooshed away. I'm sure he completely understands that he is not allowed to go on the table where we eat our dinner. He has plenty of places to go all over the house, but for some reason he insists on going where he isn't allowed.

Why does he do it? Does he have a short memory? Did he forget that the last time he got yelled at? Maybe he just wants attention. Maybe he is getting back at me for not letting him take a 4 hour nap on my lap (I usually have to cut it short after 1 hour for a bathroom break but then he gets mad) Maybe his cat back hurts and the only remedy is laying spread eagle in the middle of the dinner table. Either way, his antics can be rather irritating.

One thing I have learned is that cats will do whatever they want to do. They have a selective memory, and only remember the things that suit themselves. Even if you have to tell them to get off the table 100 times, they will still do it 100 more times. It really doesn't help to be mad at them. Being mad wastes your time and their cat time.

The best thing to do is love your cat. Spend time with them and play with them as often as possible. They are like a family member rather than a pet, and we gotta treat them that way. They have relatively short lives so we just have to enjoy them, and every moment with them before they are gone. I love my slash he's the best! SLASH GET OFF THE TABLE!!

It happens every year at this time of year. Norway has a 2 months filled with its so called  "red days". These are days where people get to take time off from work, stay home and enjoy time with their family due to one holiday or another. I have never experienced so many free days in America, but in Norway they come in bunches. March, April, and May are full of them. Easter, Norway's national day, and a special day just for Christians just to name a few.

These special days don't always come one day at a time, but are drawn out over several days. Easter, for example lasts almost a week. On these special days all of the stores close down, and everybody is encouraged to stay home and relax with their family. It actually sounds like a really nice thing.

When I was a city worker, I welcomed these days. It's extra time off, and you get paid for it. Who wouldn't want that? Now that I work at a grocery store, I despise the red days. If you are a grocery store worker, I hope you feel me here. You see, the stores close down and everyone goes shopping like it is the end of the world. Everybody stockpiles on everything they can get their hands on. I'm not talking about just food, but also alcohol, beer, cigarettes and everything else.

If you work at a store in Norway the day before or the day after a red day you can expect extreme stress. Long lines, grumpy customers and shelves running out of stuff is the norm. In my experience we usually have double the customers, but the amount of employees working remains the same, therefore placing a heavy burden on the employees. Your niceness capacity basically gets pushed to the limit.

One might come to work with a happy positive attitude, but after being disrespected by rude customers, apologizing 50 times that you have run out of a certain item, cleaning up broken jars of pasta sauce (many customers don't even bother to tell you they made a mess all over the floor you just have to find it yourself), stopping thieves from stealing, apologizing for the long lines, and so much more, that genuine smile starts to become a fake smile. You have to be strong to be able to keep it up.

I am the night manager, so I take my experiences from the night shift. You can imagine how it can get, the last hour at a grocery store the night before everything is going to close down. People get crazy, and what normally is a dead hour becomes an hour of nightmares. People are only thinking about themselves, and what they need to buy so they can have something to consume during the closed days. Were you planning to close the doors at the actual closing time? Not a chance, because everybody has to go shopping last minute. They don't care if you have bus to catch after work as long as they have their potato chips, soda, and cigarettes.

Yes of course tomorrow is always a new day, and it is easy to get over the hard days once they are over, but in my opinion the red days suck. It just means a whole lot of extra work and stress. It forces you to be nice, when being nice should just come natural. On the bright side I look forward to the long stretch from the end of may until Christmas time with no red days. On the even brighter side, I intend to enjoy this red day with my family to the fullest because I earned it. I hope you enjoy yours! Have a great day! (genuine smile included)

Last summer during our visit to Seattle, Tonje and I got to experience one of the nicest meals we have ever eaten! We got to indulge ourselves at a restaurant called The Crab Pot. It is a famous restaurant located near the sea. It is so famous that it has been shown on the discovery channel on a program called Man Vs Food. Me and the rest of my family in Washington ate there together.

They give you a bib, a wooden hammer, and a wooden board. Then they dump a pile of the most delicious food onto the middle of the table, and then you just HAVE AT IT! It was so amazing and good. Three different kinds of crab legs, shrimps, muscles, and corn on the cob all lay there before you. They also give you a supply of melted butter to dip the yummy crab meat in. They place a big bowl on the floor so that you can throw all your spent crab leg remains into it. Needless to say we were all extremely happy campers.

To this day I will never forget this meal. After eating such a meal you can't do anything other than smile and feel thankful that you got to participate in such an experience. If you ever go to Seattle Washington, I highly recommend to try THE CRAB POT!! Yummmmmmmm! (:

(continued) The circumstances surrounding the death of my uncle left our family with allot of questions and not many answers. We are only left to speculate or theorize what actually happened that day. When someone close to you dies, it helps to know how they died. Unfortunately for our family we weren't afforded the relief of knowing. It leaves an empty hole in your heart that never goes away. The only thing we can do is move on and carry on with our lives. He wouldn't want us carrying on being depressed or sad on his account. I'm sure he would want us do as he did. He would want us to never give up, and to inspire others to do the same. That is what I will do now and always do forever. We miss you Dave, but I promise to never give up!

  • (Rest in Peace David Eville, we will miss you forever)

(continued) We were all so proud of that fish. Dave cleaned it and made it into fillets and gave all the meat to me. He didn't need more because he already had a freezer full. It was an epic fishing weekend, and we even discussed the next time we would go out again. The plans were set, but unfortunately it was time for me to go back home in Oregon.

Dave personally drove me home in the jeep. It was a 3 hour drive from Olympia to Washington, but we just talked the whole way. Just before we pulled into my driveway in Salem Dave said something to me I will never forget.  He told me I was always welcome to stay with him, and that he loved having me around. I really felt like he wanted to say "I love you" but that wasn't his style. I said that I love coming to visit, and I exited the jeep with a big bag of salmon fillets. I waved to Dave, and he shouted out the window "See ya soon" and he drove off. That was the last time I would see Dave.

The following weekend I was hanging out at home in Salem, and we received a call from my aunt. She said that Dave had went out fishing, but hadn't came home. His boat had been found on the beach almost near the Oregon border. It was fully intact but the men were missing. We all assumed since they were green Beret's, they were trained to survive and camp and live on the land etc, so they were probably camping somewhere until the next morning. We held our breaths and crossed our fingers hoping they would be ok.

I later received a call that would change my life forever. My aunt called to inform me that my uncle Dave was found, and he had passed away. As she was telling me I could see it on the news as well. The boat that I had just been out in on the previous weekend was on my TV, laying on its side. I could hear the news report, and I could hear my aunt talking, but suddenly everything just went blank. I can only remember dropping to my knees in shock, and crying louder and harder than I ever have in my life. It was the saddest day I had ever experienced.

(The following is a copy of a news article)

Investigators can only speculate on what led to the deaths of three Fort Lewis soldiers in Willapa Bay, on southwest Washington's coast.
Dressed in casual clothes and wearing life preservers, the bodies of Sgt. First Class David Eville, First Sgt. Howard Hinkle and Sgt. First Class Robert Hulin were found at about 9 a.m. yesterday by Coast Guard helicopters.
Hinkle and Eville were members of the 1st Special Forces Group, while Hulin was in the 25th Infantry Division, according to a Fort Lewis news release. The Army did not disclose their ages or hometowns.
One was recovered from a mud flat about three miles south of Bay Center, on the east side of the bay.
The other two were on the western side of the bay near Leadbetter Point, about 75 yards apart. The men appeared to have died of hypothermia ? a lowering of body temperature.
In 55-degree water, the temperature of Willapa Bay yesterday, hypothermia takes between two and fInvestigators can only speculate on what led to the deaths of three Fort Lewis soldiers in Willapa ive hours, according to Coast Guard figures.
Their 20-foot boat had been spotted Saturday at 9 p.m. by a Bay Center woman who noticed it sitting upright on a mud flat at low tide, with no one aboard.
Inside the boat were a portable Global Positioning Unit, a cooler with uneaten lunches, binoculars, a first-aid kit and fishing gear.
One of the fishing rods was rigged with an orange flag, indicating the men may have tried to signal for help.
There was less than a foot of water in the boat.
The woman reported the boat's registration number, printed on the hull, to the Coast Guard. The wife of boat owner David Eville was then telephoned. She said her husband and two friends had left Olympia, where the Evilles live, at 3:30 a.m. Saturday. The men apparently drove to Westport and launched the boat around 6 a.m., a time deduced from the fact that the Coast Guard closed the Grays Harbor bar at 7:30 a.m. to vessels under 26 feet due to rough conditions.
After the boat was discovered Saturday night, a Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter was dispatched from Astoria.
Using night-vision goggles and a thermal-imaging system that detects heated objects, the five men aboard the helicopter searched Willapa Bay throughout the night, stopping only to refuel. A second Jayhawk from Astoria arrived after daylight and began searching the Pacific Ocean west of Willapa Bay.
"The mystery that everybody would like to know" the answer to, said Lt. Andy Eriks, a pilot aboard the second Coast Guard helicopter, which recovered two of the bodies, "is why would they leave the boat."
Circumstantial evidence gives only a hint of what might have happened. The signal flag. The cord on the secondary trolling motor that was pulled out as if someone had tried to start it, suggesting the possibility of engine problems.
The fact all three men had a chance to don life preservers.
But why were they out of the boat? Eriks thinks it may have been because of rough sea conditions at the mouth of Willapa Bay, which is pocked with shifting sand bars that, depending on waves, currents and wind, can toss up formidable waves.
The Coast Guard reported that seas were running 8 feet at the time of the accident, with a northwest wind of 15 knots.
"It can really get churned up out there, like a washing machine effect," Eriks said. "It can be tough to navigate for anyone. If you haven't done it before or grown up on the bay, getting in and out safely can be very difficult. With any amount of swell and surface chop, the chances are very high of your vessel being tipped over or running aground or both."
The men may have jumped ship to try to swim to shore or to avoid being aboard when a capsize appeared imminent, Eriks speculated.
After almost two decades in the Coast Guard, Eriks has been stationed at Astoria, flying rescue helicopters, the past two years. "Sure, it looks inviting," he said of the ocean. "Everybody likes to fish or be in and around the water, but you just can't take a chance out there."
He said the boat didn't have a radio or flares, two of the essential safety items (life preservers are the third) that every vessel should carry.
Another caveat: Stay with a vessel, Eriks said, even if it capsizes, because it is much easier to spot from the air than a swimmer.

  • (Possibly the last picture ever taken of my uncle Dave)

(continued) With only a couple hours of sleep, Daniel and I managed to pull it together and get our shoes and jacket on. Everything else was prepared and we hopped into the jeep which was running and already warm inside. Dave made it so convenient and easy for us when we went on fishing trips. It was about 5:30 am when we hit the road and headed to Willapa Bay, which is an excellent area for fishing along the coastline of Washington.

The trip would probably take an hour or more, so Daniel quickly fell asleep in the front passenger seat in attempt to catch up on the missing sleep from the intense horror movie night we had. Its a beautiful drive from Olympia to Willapa Bay, so I tried to keep my eyes open for as long as I could. Dave played classic rock songs the whole way. The last thing I remember was the song Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival. I stretched out in the back seat and could see Dave smiling with his sunglasses on, tapping his fingers to the beat on the steering wheel. I knew he was excited to go fishing. It was so comfortable and nice, and I fell asleep.

Just before we got to the destination, Dave woke us up as he stopped at a local shop. He had planned to get bait, and told us to go get any snacks and drinks we wanted and he would buy it. He was always generous like that. We quickly refueled with some energy drinks and chips, and headed to the boat launch which was just about 5 minutes away.

We launched the boat and headed out to sea. It wasn't perfect weather, but it was still fantastic to be out on the open ocean. Dave pulled the throttle and we started really cruising. It was an amazing feeling. It started to rain but that didn't stop us. Dave opened a hatch on the roof of the boat and hung his head out so he could see better. It was getting a little bit choppy but we just started catching air on the waves. I could see the rain blasting Dave in the face, but he was just smiling away. I could tell he was pleased that he could show off his boat to his son and nephew.

After cruising further out to sea, we came upon an area with allot of other boats. It was like an entire horizon of boats fishing. This was the area we had planned to fish. We pulled up and dropped our lines in the water, and kicked back a little bit. Still excited from the adrenaline of the boat ride, we were really motivated to catch something. The bight was slow, and we actually spent an hour with no bights. We decided to head to a less crowded area.

Near the end of the day my uncle spotted a bight on one of the poles, grabbed it, set the hook, and handed it to me and told me to go for it. It was exhausting, and I must have been fighting it for a good half hour. Finally I was running out of gas, and my muscles were starting to quit working so I tried to hand it back to my uncle so he could help. He shouted at me "Don't give up its your fish you can do it!"I thought it was a little harsh, but I didn't want to let him down. Needless to say I fought that thing to the very end and hauled it in the boat and it was around 40 pounds. Biggest salmon I had caught in my life. It was also one of the most valuable lessons I will ever learn.  NEVER GIVE UP! Unfortunately, this lesson would come at a great cost. It would be the last fishing trip I ever take with Dave. (to be continued)
